End Of The School Year

As the year draws to an end we sit here trying to figure out if we should home school again, or send them all back to school. For us we like homeschooling, but we do not know a lot of people that do it, so its hard to talk about it to others. They think we are just sheltering our children from what needs to happen. I do not do it to shelter them, We do it because we feel like we can give them better education, while teaching them about God. We also like to be together all the time as a family. We do more family functions, and vacations. We do have a few of the kids that WANT to go to public school. So, I think we should send the ones that want to go, but hubby thinks we do all or none!! That's what we have been debating all week this week.
As for the babies, well, we have had a long hard week with Nessie. She has had something wrong with her for 3 long weeks. The doctors are trying to figure this out, but no luck yet. She just screams all day. It seems like something inside of her tummy hurts her, but nothing is showing up on anything. We went to the beach for a little weekend trip, and it was awful. She ruined the trip by screaming the entire time. We don't know what to do to console her. The other babies are doing great. Leeska started school last week. It seems to be going OK, but the teacher does not tell me what is going on. She does not like kids being added to the end of the year. Leeska really loves to get on the bus and to go to school, so that makes us happy.
We enjoy our nigh time together when we can all sit together in our chair together and just watch the babies cruise the room and play with each other. They have grown so much in the past 3 months, and they have learned so much as well. We can not wait for the day that God calls us to do this again.
This week is a busy week of trying to go to new appts for Nessie to understand her pain. Pray that God will send us to the right doctors so that her pain will end forever!!

  1. Ooooh. That would really stink to be a lone homeschooler. We homeschool, but we live in an area with lots of others who do, as well. We have so many choices of lessons, classes, support groups, sports, band, choir, drama, etc. I think it would be very difficult to go it alone. I'll be praying that the Lord gives you wisdom in this decision. Praying for Nessie, too!

  2. Ah, homeschooling! I loved homeschooling my two boys when I was able to! Unfortunately, I was a single mom at the time and it was REALLY tough to do, without any help nearby. It went well for awhile, but then they started getting bored, and into trouble while I was at work, and I was forced to put them back in. How I envy the moms that get to stay at home and do it right!! Of course, it's a personal decision for each family, but I think it's GREAT. I joined an online local homeschool yahoo group and it helped quite a bit. In fact, I'm still signed on to it, though my kids have been in school for 2 years now! It's always so full of activities and things.

I'm glad that you decided not to quit your blog! Maybe you can have the kids write articles for school projects! I did that with my kids - whatever unit we studied for that month, they had to do an end-of-the-month paper and they made a webpage out of it (before I knew about blogging!) and far away relatives could read it and comment! They thought that was really fun.

Hugs to all of your older kids, and kisses to the younger ones! It's fun to see them blossom and grow - keep the pictures coming!

  3. Hi! I'm another DS mom who lives in TX and I've enjoyed lurking on your blog but haven't posted before today.

On Nessie's tummy . . . I'm assuming you've already ruled out intestinal parasites? If not, make sure to get that checked since they can cause lots of tummy pain. Another thought - Sunshine (our sweet little one with DS, adopted from India) had a lot of tummy pain after she came home to us and we had trouble getting to the bottom of it. We actually went to the ER once after she screamed desperately for over an hour. We finally determined that her symptoms were similar to a baby who has colic. They said that maybe due to her DS or perhaps some other reason, her ability to handle the gas in her tummy wasn't like other kids. We had a lot of success with laying her on her back and pumping her legs or gently pushing on her tummy. Someone also suggested mylecon (sp?) drops but by that time Sunshine had her g-tube (for an unrelated issue) and we could just vent her through that.

I hope you find a solution quickly. There is nothing worse than one of your babies hurting and not knowing what is wrong. :(
